Alumni of the Week: Chelsea Israel '09

Think D3TV is just for DePauw students pursuing a career in the media? Think again! Chelsea Israel '09 was a dedicated anchor of "The Source" during her time at DePauw, but she has chosen to go down a path that does not lead to the media.

Chelsea got her start as a news anchor on her high school's morning news show, and she was excited to hear that DePauw had so many opportunities for freshmen to get involved immediately on-air. Like many of DePauw's Media Fellows, Chelsea chose to not restrict herself to one campus media outlet. In addition to serving as an anchor for "The Source," she also tried out being a news reporter for WGRE and wrote a few articles for The DePauw. Although she did take part in other media fields, television proved to be Chelsea's strong suit, and she contributed greatly to D3TV's news department. When it came time to complete her Media Fellows internship, Chelsea stuck to her television news roots and took on an internship at C-SPAN.

Chelsea is currently in her second year of law school at Indiana Law School-Indianapolis, which has helped her see the role that the media plays in some surprising professions. Some of Chelsea's course work has involved the role that the media can play in the judicial selection process or in an attorney's work. Despite not actively pursuing a role in the media, Chelsea acknowledges that a law degree could definitely help someone pursuing a career in television news; in fact, many of the producers she worked with at C-SPAN were former attorneys. "My advice to anyone interested in entering the [media] field would be to not limit or niche yourself into one area as you may miss out on many great opportunities," she said.

We Run This Show: Rochelle White '11, Kaitlin Klose '13, and Sarah Kloppenburg '13

This week on our student spotlight, we're focusing on three of the lovely ladies who help make D3TV great: Rochelle White, Kaitlin Klose, and Sarah Kloppenburg!

Many D3TV members get their start early in their career at DePauw, but Rochelle is definitely the exception to that rule. During her time at DePauw, Rochelle has been a heavily involved member of Union Board and the Exalt Gospel Choir, taking on executive board positions in both organizations. As a change of pace, Rochelle decided to give D3TV a try in Fall 2010. She became the teleprompter assistant for "The Underground," and the rest is history! Today, Rochelle is in her first semester as a member of the Board of Directors, where she serves as Director of Scheduling Operations with Rob Weidner '14. Rochelle hopes her involvement in the station will help D3TV become a larger media outlet, and she also enjoys having a voice in the station's happenings. After graduating, Rochelle hopes to get her MBA and start her own business, but don't think she's all business: she also loves watching "Gossip Girl!" If you want to get a glimpse of Rochelle's favorite D3TV program, scroll to the bottom!

Although she is only a sophomore, Sarah has already been involved in D3TV in a big way. She got her start with the station as a sports reporter and anchor, and she eventually worked her way up to become the Assistant Director of Promotions, the position she currently holds. Many of our past student spotlights knew they wanted to be involved with campus media before they came to campus, but Sarah is definitely the exception to that rule. When she heard about D3TV, she thought it sounded interesting and decided to give it a try, despite the fact that working at a television station is quite different than her usual activities. Now that she is involved with the station, Sarah has found that she really enjoys watching "The Source," especially the sports interviews that the crew puts together. In the future, Sarah hopes to put her DePauw-developed talents to good use by helping improve people's lives.

Our last spotlighted lady, Kaitlin, also got involved in D3TV early on in her time at DePauw. Kaitlin's high school had a newspaper but no television station, so she decided to give television a shot at DePauw. She started as a reporter for "The Source" and quickly got involved in the Board of Directors. Currently, Kaitlin is Executive Producer for the station and is the creator of "Connections to Decastle: Bringing DePauw and Greencastle Together." The interview show has been on a brief hiatus this semester, but look out for new episodes soon! In addition to her D3TV work, Kaitlin is also a Media Fellow and an assistant editor for The DePauw. Chances are, if you need to find Kaitlin, you will find her in the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media! Kaitlin is hoping all her hours spent working in the PCCM will pay off, and she aspires to follow in the footsteps of two of our alumni spotlights, Rachel Pfennig and Jill Irvin, by moving to Los Angeles and working for an entertainment show.

As Rochelle, Sarah, and Kaitlin illustrate, students of any backgrounds with any career paths can join in the fun at D3TV. The ladies suggest talking to any of the directors (including themselves!) about their experiences with the station or coming to the station for the "Training Show" on Tuesday nights. "Don't be afraid to try something new! If you want to start a show, go for it. If you want to anchor or edit, go for it," Kaitlin said. "We're all willing to help and teach you everything we know...that's what we're here for!"

Rochelle, Sarah, and Kaitlin are all excited for it, and now it's your turn to check it out...a preview of "The Bachelor at DePauw!" Check it out here and let us know what you think!

Alumni of the Week: Jill Irvin '09

Did you know...that some of today's most popular shows, such as "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "The Today Show," and "So You Think You Can Dance" have DePauw students and alumni involved in their productions?

Did you also know that D3TV can help YOU be one of those Tigers involved?

For Jill Irvin '09, D3TV and her experiences in DePauw's campus media helped her earn an internship with "The Today Show" and eventually positions working with Ellen DeGeneres and the stars of "So You Think You Can Dance." Jill got her start in television by taking a broadcasting course in high school, which encouraged her to get involved with the "Training Show" at D3TV and hosting a radio show on WGRE upon enrolling at DePauw. Campus media played a large role in Jill's life at DePauw, and she was involved in D3TV and WGRE all four years she was on campus. Jill's media involvement ranged from hosting a radio show at 3 am to producing "The View at DePauw" and co-hosting WGRE's "Breakfast with the Babes" with last week's alumni spotlight Rachel Pfennig '09 (who you can learn more about here!) Jill also got involved with the Board of Directors during her first year on campus by taking on the position of Director of Program Acquisitions. From there, she stayed involved until graduation, even serving as General Manager of the station for a year.

Today, Jill lives in Los Angeles and is the Assistant Production Coordinator with "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which means she is involved in budgets, travel arrangements, and other logistics for the show. While Jill could spend her spare time watching her favorite TV shows such as "Glee," Modern Family," or "The Office," she instead chose to take on a position with "So You Think You Can Dance," a position Jill found by connecting with a DePauw alumni. Although working on two shows has created a very crowded schedule, Jill says she would not have it any other way and credits her success to her willingness to take on extra responsibilities. "Being successful depends on having a good attitude and just saying 'yes' to everything. The hours are long, and productions often become super hectic," she said. "But, if you love it, you love it. And I know there is nothing else I'd rather be doing!"

If you want to see what Jill is working on, give "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" a chance! It airs at 11 am weekdays on WTHR, the Indianapolis NBC affiliate.
